Mother in custody on unrelated charges after 1-year-old overdoses on opiate in Akron

Akron police administered naloxone to a 1-year-old after an older sibling called 911 on Thursday evening. The 9-year-old told the 911 dispatcher the baby was not breathing.

An initial dose of naloxone was ineffective, and the baby was rushed to Akron Children's Hospital where a second dose revived the child.

In the 911 call, you can hear the 9-year-old pleading for help. The dispatcher asks for the mother and then tries to talk her through CPR.

When police and medics got there, the baby's mother, Destanie Carter, was home. But she left soon after.

"She fled once police and paramedics were trying to deal with the baby, giving CPR, giving narcan," a witness told News 5.

Akron Police Lieutenant Rick Edwards said Carter was later arrested on unrelated charges for theft.

Police believe her baby got into drugs that were laying around the house.

Carter hasn't been charged in connection to the incident Thursday yet but Lt. Edwards said she'll probably face a child endangering charge at some point.

In the meantime, the boy has been placed in the care of Summit County children's services. His two siblings are with family.
