Unpleasant odor wafting through Canton has residents and officials puzzled

There's more than holiday cheer in the air in Canton — something stinks.

Reports have been coming in all week from all over about terrible smells wafting through the air.

"The ones today have been about a cooking smell or even a rotten meat smell," said City Health Commissioner Jim Adams.

The city's air pollution division took about a dozen complaint calls regarding the smell on Friday.

"We've had a number of odor complaints that were kind of a mystery in the community," Adams said.

Despite the smell, officials said residents shouldn't be alarmed about anything dangerous.

"We don't think it's dangerous. But it would be nice to know where it's coming from," Adams said.

The health department has investigators looking into the odor right now. "We are trying to investigate what the cause of the source of the odor is. Once we find that out, we will let people know," Adams said.

The fire department has also been called with concerns since the smell is coming into people's homes.

A Dominion Energy spokesperson said the company has checked for leaks and the odor isn't gas.
