Neighbors in one east side Cleveland neighborhood were without running water Thursday night after a Cleveland Division of Water van fell into a large sinkhole while responding to a call for a water main break.

The van was responding to the leak on East 127th Street between Locke Avenue and Cornado Avenue when it feel in the sinkhole. The van was parked when the street began to collapse. The investigator was not in the van when it fell into the hole and was unharmed.
News 5 asked Alex Margevicius, the Commissioner of Cleveland Water, how long they knew about the water line break.
He said it was just reported Thursday.
"In 30 years of record, we have no indication of any break occurring. This is the first record of a water main break on this street," Margevicius said.
News 5 dug into past reporting on Cleveland's roads. That segment of road is graded a 'C.'
As for what lies beneath it? The commissioner told News 5 they checked the street for leaks proactively in May of 2016 and found nothing.
"We don't know what the root cause of the sinkhole was. We will do some forensics to get to the bottom of it," he said.
Folks living near the sinkhole told News 5 they want an answer and a full inspection.
"Don't look at 100-year-old reports and say we did this street 100 years ago. There's people living on this street, it's important," Tanya Higgins said.
The street is going to be closed off all weekend and into next week. They're repairing lines and then they'll fill the sinkhole.
