The situation in Puerto Rico is getting worse, according to an Ohio couple stranded there.
Brian and Tanya Davis were celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary when, a week ago, Hurricane Maria came through and decimated the island.
Davis is the former Director of the Northeast Ohio Coalition for the Homeless. Now, he is the one struggling – the last time we spoke to him, he was staying at the San Juan convention center shelter.
“There are tons of military and FEMA workers, but the problem is they’re not out on the streets of San Juan, helping people stay alive,” he said.
Davis says the response to the disaster in Puerto Rico has been tragic.
“All the hotels are booked, or flooded and closed because of hurricane damage,” he said. “So we’ve been wandering around the last two days looking for a place to stay.”
Davis and his wife were scheduled to take off last Saturday – the earliest, they may be able to leave now is October 6.
Davis described the chaos unfolding around him on the streets of San Juan.
“There are six hour gas lines here, there are many places without water, most of the island doesn’t have electricity and it’s been a very big struggle, even to stay alive in this heat,” he said.
