Gordon and the Browns both issued a statement about the decision.

Within minutes of Gordon's announcement, he began trending on Twitter. He tweeted the following:

This is the recent setback Gordon's career. He was set to return the after a four-game suspension.

Gordon was suspended in February 2015 after he failed a drug test. He missed the 2015 seasons for multiple violations of the league's substance abuse policy.

He appeared in Cuyahoga County Juvenile Court earlier this month after Gordon failed to submit a paternity test a woman accused him of being the father of her child. An arrest warrant was issued, but was later canceled after Gordon appeared in court.

Christina Lockhart filed a complaint saying Gordon was the father of her child. The complaint asked the court to order Gordon to pay child support and health insurance for the child.
