Akron police are looking for a suspect (s) who broke into a mausoleum at East Akron Cemetery Tuesday afternoon.

Rita Day-Lavelle was on her daily walk when she noticed the architectural detail of a mausoleum.

“I was on my way to do my power walk for the day and was going past East Akron Cemetery,” said Lavelle.

Upon further look, she saw the mausoleum doors open.

“I got a really bad feeling, then out of the peripheral, just real quick, I thought I saw the corner of a coffin.”

She immediately called her husband John to examine what she saw.

“It took me five, six, or seven seconds before I could figure out what it was, then I realized, this is a man," said John.

A body buried 37 years ago is now missing its limbs.

“The tie was around his neck and it was hanging back around here, but the head was missing," Lavelle said.

Police said someone broke the lock of the mausoleum and damaged two crypt marble seals.

The unknown suspect (s) also removed the casket from crypt 402 and dumped the remains out of the casket.

“The disgust, what somebody would do to someone’s loved one, the disrespect… they’ve already buried him, put him to rest and then they have to do it again," Lavelle said.

Police are investigating the incident.
