CLEVELAND — An 18-year-old accused of killing Cleveland police detective James Skernivitz last week appeared in court for his arraignment on Wednesday.

David McDaniel Jr., 18, has been charged with two counts of aggravated murder, according to Cleveland Municipal Court records.

The prosecutor asked the judge for at least a $2 million bond. McDaniel's public defender asked the judge to consider that he has no previous criminal record.

Judge Ann Clare Oakar set a $3 million bond for McDaniel, who appeared before the judge through a video from the Cuyahoga County Jail.

His preliminary hearing has been scheduled for Sept. 16 at 8:30 a.m.

Skernivitz, 53, was shot and killed around 10 p.m. in the 3200 block of West 65th Street on Sept. 3. Another person, later identified as Scott Dingess, 50, was also killed. Police said Dingess was a victim of the shooting and not a suspect.
