Firefighters in Green battled an apartment fire just after 11:45 p.m. Tuesday night.

According to firefighters at the scene a woman living inside the apartment at Briarwood Estates on Mayfair Road was able to get out alive and was being evaluated by EMS crews at the scene.

A witness told News 5 that the woman did try and return to rescue her dog but he stopped her before she went back into the burning apartment.

Firefighters said the dog was safe and that they were keeping it warm inside an SUV used by the fire department.

The fire appeared to have been inside just the one apartment but smoke may have damage the neighboring apartments.

Green firefighters were assisted by firefighters from both Summit and Stark County.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
