MANSFIELD, Ohio — A 55-year-old Mansfield corrections officer has died from the novel coronavirus, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine said during his briefing on Wednesday.
Corrections officer John Dawson tested positive for the virus on March 30. He worked at the state prison in Marion and had an underlying health condition, according to the governor.
"His death reminds us as we celebrate the fact that Ohio is doing comparatively well, we are still seeing a large amount of deaths. People are dying every single day," DeWine said.
DeWine said not everyone is getting the protection they need to stay safe while working on the frontline. He urges everyone who has a mask to recycle them and donate them to Battelle.
"When you don't do that you are denying someone else a mask," DeWine said.
