COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio Department of Health has a new dashboard on its coronavirus website that allows users to look at the proliferation of new cases down to individual zip codes.
DeWine announced the dashboard during his weekly news conference on Thursday. Prior to the dashboard going live, visitors to the site were only able to look at cases by county.
DeWine said the dashboard “continues our commitment to giving you the most information we can as soon as we can.”
Users can look at the total number of cases in each zip code, as well as cases that have occurred either within the last 30 days or within the last two weeks.
The dashboard shows that the 43302 zip code, which surrounds the city of Marion in Marion County, has the most total COVID-19 cases of any zip code in the state, with 3,551. The zip code for the Walnut Creek area in Holmes County - 44687 - has had the most total COVID-19 cases per capita - 75 cases among its population of about 249, according to the most recent census data.
Over the last 30 days, and over the past two weeks, the 43068 zip code has had the highest number of total COVID-19 cases. That zip code encapsulates Reynoldsburg, a suburb of Columbus, and the surrounding area.
Looking at recent cases per capita, the lightly-populated Walnut Creek area is again at the top, with 69 cases in the last 30 days and nine cases in the last two weeks.
Zip code data is something that the ODH had considered before. On April 3, then ODH Health Director Dr. Amy Acton said that the department was concerned about the invasion of privacy of individuals in less densely-populated areas where someone could possibly determine who they were by looking at zip code data, but it was something that was being discussed.
To alleviate this concern, DeWine said on Thursday that the dashboard won’t show case counts for zip codes with fewer than five cases or 100 residents.
