Funeral plans for slain Cleveland Police Detective James Skernivitz announced

CLEVELAND — Funeral plans for a veteran Cleveland police officer who was gun downed have been announced.

The officer, Det. James Skernivitz, was shot and killed in the line of duty on Sept. 3.

A wake for friends and family has been set for Thursday, Sept. 10 from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the A. Ripepi & Sons Funeral Home in Middleburg Heights.

A Catholic Mass of Burial will be held at The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Cleveland on Friday, but an exact time has not been decided at this time.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to the family in support of his children's education are being accepted.

According to the Cleveland Police Department, the officer was sworn in recently as a member of the Operation Legend Task Force—a federal law enforcement effort taking places in cities across the country to combat gun violence.

Skernivitz joined the department in 1998 and was most recently assigned to the department’s Gang Impact Unit.
