An 11-year-old girl injured in a Canton house fire earlier this month was taken off life support Saturday and died with her family at her side.
The fire happened just before 8 p.m. on July 12 in the 900 block of 3rd Street NW.
When fire crews arrived, they found heavy flames coming from second-story windows. Bystanders pointed them toward a second-floor window where a child was believed to be located, authorities said.
Crews initially tried reaching the child through the interior stairwell but were forced out by heat. Firefighters then used a ladder and found her in a bathroom. She was taken to a nearby hospital and then flown to Akron Children's Hospital but never regained consciousness, authorities said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
