AKRON, Ohio — A 7-year-old boy is recovering in the hospital after police say he was shot in both feet Thursday night in an Akron apartment.

Officers responded at 8:30 p.m. to Akron Children’s Hospital for a 7-year-old boy who was shot.

Officers spoke to a 22-year-old man who said he was babysitting his 7-year-old nephew when he heard a gunshot and realized the child was shot.

The man placed his nephew in the car and he and his girlfriend drove him to the hospital.

Officers searched the apartment and determined the shooting happened inside an apartment building in the 2500 block of Romig Road, in Akron's Kenmore neighborhood.

At least two other children were inside the apartment when the boy was shot, police said.

Police said no firearms were found in the apartment or vehicle that the child was taken into the hospital.

The shooting remains under investigation but is believed to have been an accident.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the detective bureau at 330-375-2490 or 330-375-2TIP.

Police said they may press charges as the investigation continues, including child endangerment charges, and said they hope this incident encourages individuals to keep their weapons away from children.
