AKRON, Ohio — A 71-year-old pizza delivery driver was robbed in Akron Thursday evening, according to police.
The robbery happened just before 6:30 p.m. in the 1100 block of Girard Street.
The driver told police that he had just dropped a pizza off when he was approached by two men or teens. One of them brandished a handgun, threatened the driver and demanded money from him.
The thieves fled after taken less than $50 from the driver.
A specific description of the robbers has not been provided.
Akron police have noticed a spike in robberies committed against pizza delivery drivers. There have been six cases in the last three months. Guns were used in most of the cases. No injuries have been reported and no arrests have been made.
Police are trying to figure out if any of the crimes are connected. Many of the victims said the crooks appeared to be teens or possibly even younger.
Officers are stepping up patrols in the neighborhoods where the crimes happened and they're planning a special training session for pizza shops to offer tips on how to stay safe.
