Akron police are searching for a suspect accused of attacking a 50-year-old woman inside her apartment and stealing her $75,000 inheritance.

Aggravated robbery and aggravated burglary warrants have been issued for Derrick Whatley, 33, of Akron.

Police said Whatley entered an unlocked door of an apartment in the 300 block of South Maple Street on May 26 and proceeded to pistol-whip and choke Lisa Mitchell.

"He smacked me in the jaw with the butt of the gun. I had a nasty bruise for over a week and I also had a bruise on my neck where he choked me," Mitchell told News 5.

Mitchell's boyfriend, Craig Bradney, died from liver cancer the day before the robbery and had left Mitchell with $75,000 in cash.

"I was supposed to be living on that money for a good, long time," Mitchell said.

However, the gunman demanded the money which was in a bag in the apartment. Mitchell doesn't know the suspect and isn't sure how he learned of her large inheritance.

"Hopefully, he'll get caught," she said.

Summit County Crimestoppers is offering a reward up to $5,000 for information leading to Whatley. Police said he should be considered and dangerous.

Tipsters can remain anonymous when calling 330-434-COPS.
