VILLAGE OF CLINTON, Ohio — An 85-year-old Cleveland man died in a crash Thursday evening after his vehicle went over an embankment and into a river in the Village of Clinton, located in Summit County, according to the Akron Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

State troopers said Franklin D. Roffe, 85, of Cleveland was traveling east on Clinton Road when he went left of center as he approached the intersection of Cleveland-Massillon road. He failed to stop at a stop sign, continuing to travel eastbound off the east side of Cleveland-Massillon road.

He traveled through a parking lot, over an embankment, sending his vehicle airborne. The car crossed over railroad tracks before going into the Tuscarawas River, fully submerging his vehicle.

Roffe was transported to Summa Health Systems in Barberton where he was pronounced dead.

His passenger, an 83-year-old woman from Cleveland, suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash remains under investigation. It’s not believed alcohol and/or drugs were factors in this crash.
