AKRON, Ohio — The Akron Police Department is investigating two smash and grabs that happened early Thursday morning.

The first incident happened at Family Dollar, in the 1900 block of N. Arlington Street around 2:15 a.m.

When officers arrived, they found the front glass door shattered. A preliminary investigation indicates that an unknown person broke into the store, damaged a display and tried to steal cigarettes. The person left empty-handed, authorities said.

About 15 minutes later, police got a second call for an alarm at Dollar General in the 2000 block of Mogadore Road.

As before, arriving officers found the front door smashed, authorities said. It appears that the burglar used a rock to smash the glass and enter the store. The burglar then grabbed an unknown number of cigarettes.

Authorities said similar incidents have occurred in the past few weeks. Anyone who has any information about the burglaries is asked to call the Akron Police Department Detective Bureau at 330-375-2490. You can also call Summit County CrimeStoppers at 330-434-COPS.
