Akron police dealing with violent and deadly crime wave

It's been a violent and bloody week in the city of Akron. Police have responded to multiple robberies, assaults, shootings and homicides in just the past seven days. Here is breakdown of the events over the past week.

FRIDAY, JULY 6

At around 10 a.m., a 31-year-old man was shot in the head by three men who entered his apartment. He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of a graze wound.


A few hours later around 1 p.m., a 22-year-old man was at a friend's house near the 700 block of Caddo Avenue when two people ordered him to take his clothes off at gunpoint and then robbed him of $1,000 cash. The men then ordered the victim to get into the trunk of a white Chevrolet Impala and drove off. The victim was able to escape by pulling the emergency handle inside the trunk and jump out of the car while it was still moving.

At about 5:30 p.m., a 28-year-old Canton woman was punched in the face by an unknown man and robbed near Sherman and Torrey streets. The suspect ran off after the robbery.


Later that evening around 9 p.m., a 30-year-old and a 28-year-old were shot on the 50 block of North Arlington Street. Authorities also learned a 17-year-old girl was shot in the arm during the incident but was taken to the hospital before officers arrived. None of the victim's injuries appeared to be life-threatening, police said.


A couple of hours later another shooting happened near Catskill and Dahlgreen drives. Around 11 p.m., officers were sent to the 1300 block of Dahlgreen Drive for a teen laying in the grass with a gunshot wound. The victim, who was shot in the head, was taken to Akron City Hospital but later died from his injury. He was identified as 17-year-old Damonta Martin.


SATURDAY, JULY 7

A resident's pitbull mix was shot in the shoulder in the 2000 block of 18th Street Southwest around 1:30 a.m. No suspects were identified in the shooting. The dog's condition is unknown.


Another shooting call came in around 2:30 a.m. outside of the Clutch Gentlemen's Club, 1890 South Arlington Street. Police found the victim near the corner of North Arlington Street and East Market Street. The victim crashed his car into the side of a building while attempting to drive himself to the hospital, police said. The man had been shot multiple times but the injuries didn't appear life-threatening.


A 46-year-old man was found lying in the street around 3:30 a.m. with a gunshot wound to his head around on the 600 block of Schiller Avenue. It appears the man had been walking to his car when he was approached by two men who robbed and then shot him, police said.

The victim was identified as Bonn Rassavong, 46, of Akron.


Nearly three hours later, a second homicide occurred in a parking lot on the 300 block of South Arlington Street. The victim, 58-year-old Robert L. McCall, of Akron, was found with a gunshot wound to the head.


SUNDAY, JULY 8

Around 1:30 p.m., police responded to Cleveland Clinic Akron General Hospital when a 19-year-old man entered the emergency room with a gunshot wound to the shoulder. The teen told police he was a passenger in a car traveling southbound on Mercer Avenue near Cadillac Boulevard when a gray four-door sedan heading northbound opened fire on the vehicle he was in as it drove by.


THURSDAY, JULY 12

A 51-year-old was shot around 9:30 a.m. when he and another man were walking from his parked car near Lovers Lane and Whitney Avenue. The 25-year-old man who was with the victim was uninjured in the shooting. The victim drove himself to the hospital afterward and is recovering, police said.


A 22-year-old was pistol-whipped and robbed in a home invasion on Summer Court around 12:30 p.m. The robber stole cash, a cell phone and other items before leaving, police said. No suspect information was released.


Just before midnight, a 32-year-old man was killed and two children were injured in a shooting that happened on the 900 block of Concord Avenue.

A 10-year-old girl was shot in the shoulder and A 13-year-old girl was shot in the leg. Their injuries don't appear to be life-threatening, police said.

The identity of the 32-year-old hasn't been released. There are no suspects at this time.
