AKRON, Ohio — The Akron Police Department is investigating a fatal hit-skip crash involving a motorcycle that occurred Wednesday evening in West Akron.

Just before 6 p.m., a 2010 Honda motorcycle was headed east on Copley Road in the curb lane when sedan struck the motorcycle from behind, police said.

The crash caused the driver of the motorcycle, 42-year-old Charles Mullins, to lose control and strike a utility pole in front of the Dollar Tree on Copley Road, according to police.

Mullins was ejected from the motorcycle and struck his head on the curb. He was not wearing a helmet.

Police said Mullins was transported to Cleveland Clinic Akron General Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the sedan left the scene after the crash.

Police said the vehicle that struck the motorcycle and fled was a silver or light-colored sedan with four doors, but there is no driver description at this time.

Speed or alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash, which remains under investigation, according to police.
