AKRON, Ohio — The University of Akron is offering a new course that is bound to be a hit with its students.
The Science of Brewing & Fermentation is a one credit hour course that began in the spring semester, according to the university.
The University of Akron described the course as:
An introduction to the scientific principles of brewing and fermentation as it applies to the craft beer movement in Northeast Ohio. Students will learn the process of brewing and fermentation and visit local breweries to incorporate community engagement into this growing industry topic.
The only pre-requisite for The Science of Brewing & Fermentation is that students must be 21 by the first day of the class.
Students begin by learning the history of brewing, ingredients, equipment and sanitation before brewing their own recipe.
The course wraps things up with a tour of Hoppin’ Frog, Thirsty Dog and other local breweries.
It’s not all just making beer and visiting breweries. Students are given quizzes and writing assignments and have reading to complete as well.
The special topics course is offered by the College of Health Professions and School of Nutrition & Dietetics.
