MADISON TOWNSHIP, Ohio — A duo accused of committing two armed robberies within a week, one at a Speedway in Stow and a Burger King in North Canton, have been arrested following a high-speed chase that started at a Madison Township parking lot, according to police.
Shaun Phipps, 38, and Ashleigh Mayfield, 27, were arrested Tuesday morning by Madison Township police after a vehicle pursuit that started in a parking lot of Walmart, 6067 North Ridge Road.
The driver, later identified as Phipps, ignored officers' commands and sped off from a parking space at a high rate of speed, nearly striking a Madison Township police cruiser, according to police. The pursuit continued west on North Ridge Road after Phipps ran a red light at the Green and North Ridge roads intersection.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol intervened and deployed spikes in the path of the vehicle.
Mayfield was arrested and charged on warrants of aggravated robbery and theft of a motor vehicle issued by the Stow Police Department. Phipps was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence, failure to obey traffic control devices, operating a vehicle without headlights and a felony charge of failure to comply with order or signal of a police officer, according to police.
Both Mayfield and Phipps had warrants for armed robberies at a Stow Speedway, where they stole an employee's vehicle, and a second armed robbery at a Jackson Township Burger King, where they entered the restaurant with a gun and demanded money before fleeing through a rear exit with an undisclosed amount of cash, police said.
The stolen vehicle from the robbery was located abandoned in Akron, police said.
Mayfield and Phipps are both being held in Lake County Jail.
