AKRON, Ohio — Jared Marcum, an 18-year-old from North Canton who recently started as a student at the University of Akron, was killed in a crash involving a tanker truck on Route 8 in Akron Tuesday morning. His family, friends and the community are remembering the 2020 GlenOak ak High School graduate as a caring and supportive young man.
The Summit County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed Marcum died in a fiery crash after his vehicle collided with a gasoline tanker during the morning rush.
Marum, who is the oldest of four children, played the trombone in high school. On Wednesday afternoon, several current and former band members gathered at the spirit rock to comfort each other and paint the rock in Marcum's honor.
His name and date of death were spray painted in white on one side of the rock. A trombone and 2020 were painted on another side.
The University of Akron, where Marcum was a student, released the following statement following his death:
"The entire University of Akron community is deeply saddened to learn of the tragic death of student, Jared Marcum, in a traffic accident on August 25. Our thoughts and condolences are with Jared’s family, loved ones and friends during this very difficult time. Support services are available for members of the campus community," the university said.
According to the University, Marcum, who began his freshman year this week, was planning to study civil engineering.
Brent May, superintendent of Plain Local Schools, said in a statement that he had the privilege of coaching Marcum in little league.
"I write this communication with a heavy heart. Jared Marcum a 2020 GlenOak graduate, was killed tragically today in a car accident near Akron, Ohio. I had the privilege of coaching Jared in Little League baseball through Holly Hills. Jared was a member of the GlenOak High School Band, along with other activities, and was a wonderful young man and will be greatly missed. Please continue to keep his family in your thoughts and prayers. The district will have grief counselors available tomorrow for any student or staff."
