AKRON, Ohio — A major employer in Northeast Ohio is halting production in North and South America and in Europe because of a sudden decline in market demand caused by the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus, according to News 5 media partner at Ohio.com.
Goodyear said it will halt tire manufacturing through at least April 13. The company said it is following guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and is limiting visitor access and business travel. It will implement remote working and social distancing practices.
The Akron tire maker said it is stopping the Americas plant after the stock market closed Wednesday. Other plants in France, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Slovenia and Poland will be closed. The company will closely monitor inventory and supply of raw materials.
In total, Goodyear has about 63,000 employees at 47 facilities in 21 countries.
