AKRON, Ohio — The LeBron James Family Foundation is partnering up with the Tangier in Akron to develop a sports complex and community space for students at James’ I PROMISE school.
The long-term partnership announced Thursday will turn Akron’s landmark event center on West Market Street into a community space for I PROMISE students and their families.
As part of the collaboration between the LJFF and the Tangier, the upper deck of the Tangier’s parking structure will be converted into a multi-use sports complex that will have basketball courts, a play area and interactive outdoor spaces.
The conversion of the parking deck is being funded by a donation from the DICK’s Sporting Goods Foundation that was received in 2019.
The sports complex at the Tangier will also be the future site of the I PROMISE school’s physical education classes, school assemblies and outdoor family gatherings.
Just a few blocks away from the I PROMISE school, the Tangier will provide a location for physical activities as well as providing a positive community space for the students and their parents.
“We are so excited about this opportunity to create something unique and innovative at The Tangier for our students and families. It fits so many of our needs in terms of a safe, multi-use facility for the I PROMISE School students’ physical activities that is also a community space for our family events,” said Michele Campbell, Executive Director of the LeBron James Family Foundation. “As our family continues to grow every year, it’s getting harder to find a space that can accommodate all of us at once. The Tangier not only has the space, but also the passion for our families, so it’s a perfect fit.”
The Tangier said it will continue to host wedding receptions, private events and concerts and the collaboration with the LJFF is a way to help better serve the city of Akron.
