AKRON, Ohio — The Akron Police Department is investigating a two-car crash that happened Thursday night and left one person dead.
It happened around 10:05 p.m. near East Cuyahoga Falls and Corwin avenues.
Police say a Mitsubishi Mirage was heading eastbound on East Cuyahoga Falls Avenue when a Honda CR-V rear-ended it at a high rate of speed. The impact caused the Mitsubishi to slide into the opposite lane.
The Honda then went over a curb, hit two utility poles and stopped after hitting a retaining wall, police said.
The Honda’s driver, a 30-year-old man who has not been identified, died as a result of the crash. He was not wearing a seat belt and pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.
The Mitsubishi’s driver, a 23-year-old woman, sustained minor injuries. A passenger in the Mitsubishi also sustained serious injuries. Neither were wearing seat belts, authorities said.
Police say speed is a factor in the crash but it’s not clear if drugs/alcohol are factors.
The crash remains under investigation.
