NEW FRANKLIN, Ohio — A man was arrested following a standoff in New Franklin Monday, according to the New Franklin Police Department.

Officers were called to a residence on Swigart Road after receiving a call that someone was firing a gun followed by another call that a suicidal man was destroying a camper, police said.

Once on the scene, officers made contact with James Shirey, 29, who had barricaded himself in a motor home armed with a shotgun, according to police.

Shirey fired numerous shots from inside the motor home, police said.

Barberton SWAT was called to the scene to assist officers in the standoff, according to police.

While negotiating, police said Shirey fired more shots towards the officers.

Non-lethal measures were then deployed into the motor home, causing Shirey to run from the camper. Officers were able to apprehend him while he fled the motor home.

Shirey was arrested and charged with felonious assault on a peace officer, weapons under disability and outstanding warrant charges, according to police.

Police said no officers were injured during the incident.
