STARK COUNTY, Ohio — A man who was arrested earlier this month for allegedly beating an 85-year-old man after the two were involved in a car crash pleaded not guilty in court on Tuesday.

Travonce Backie, 32, is charged with attempted murder, a first-degree felony, and felonious assault, a second-degree felony, according to court records. He is being held in lieu of a $500,000 bond.

Authorities said they believe Backie and the victim were involved in a crash on 8th Street NE on Feb. 27.

The 85-year-old said he was struck by a car that pulled out of a parking lot and into his path. It was then the driver, now believed to be Backie, approached him and allegedly began beating him while he was in his car.

The attack left the 85-year-old man hospitalized with multiple facial injuries.

Backie is scheduled to appear in court on March 12 for a pretrial hearing.
