AKRON, Ohio — The Akron Police Department is investigating an incident where one woman was killed and another was injured during an attack Tuesday in the city's Wallhaven neighborhood.
Authorities said that they responded to the 1900 block of Scudder Drive near White Pond Drive after receiving a phone call about a woman in distress. When officers arrived, they found two women who had knife wounds. Their names haven't been released.
The women, one 19-years-old and the other 50-years-old, were taken to a nearby hospitals for treatment. According to detectives, the 50-year-old woman died at Cleveland Clinic Akron General Medical Center. The other woman is being treated at Summa Akron City Hospital. Her condition hasn't been released.
The Summit County Medical Examiner is treated the death as homicide. An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.
According to Lt. Michael Miller, someone from a local college called the Akron Police Department around 12:45 p.m. concerned about the welfare of someone inside the home.
Police gained entry into the house and found the women with serious injuries.
The violence stunned neighbors in the normally peaceful neighborhood. John Stafford lives two doors down and described the family as friendly.
"It was a a shock because this is a quiet street. They seem like good people and I think this has taken everyone by surprise on the entire block," Stafford said.
No one has been charged in the crime. Miller said detectives are looking at the evidence and trying to determine if there is any sign of a break-in or if this could have been a domestic case.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is assisting with the investigation.
