AKRON, Ohio — Around 100 Dominion Energy customers, both residential and commercial, in Downtown Akron are without natural gas Saturday night as temps are expected to drop in to single digits.
According to a Dominion Energy spokesperson, crews are working to restore service. "It's expected to take most of Sunday to restore all affected customers," the company said.
"Customers who need shelter for the night are urged to call Dominion Energy at 1-877-542-2630 as warming centers have closed for the evening," the company said.
Warming shelters will be available again on Sunday.
"The city of Akron activated warming centers due to the extreme cold. The Mason Community Learning Center, 700 E. Exchange St., Akron, will be open Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 10 p.m."
Here are tips on how to prevent damage to the pipes in your home:
- Let water from your faucet drip. A trickle of water might be all it takes to keep your pipes from freezing.
- Open cabinet doors. This allows any heat to travel to un-insulated pipes under sinks and appliances near exterior walls.
- Or you may choose to shut off the water and drain the water system. Be aware that if you have a fire protection sprinkler system, it may be de-activated when you shut off the water.
