AKRON, Ohio — A 19-year-old man has been arrested after he allegedly shot a 15-year-old boy and fled the scene, prompting a chase with Akron police Sunday afternoon.

Joseph White, 19, was charged with felonious assault, carrying a concealed weapon, improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle, improperly discharging a firearm and willful flee.

On Sunday at around 4:15 p.m., police heard gunshots as they patrolled the area of West Thornton and Taylor streets.

When police arrived at the area, they witnessed a vehicle leaving at a high rate of speed. At the same time, additional officers responded to the 1100 block of Taylor streets for reports of a shooting.

Police attempted to stop the driver, later identified as White, who left the scene and led police on chase, which eventually ended on State Road in Barberton.

Police located a handgun during White's arrest. He was taken to Summit County Jail, where he remains in custody.

White was named a suspect in the shooting of the 15-year-old, who was taken to Akron Children’s Hospital with a gunshot wound to his leg. His injuries are believed to be non-life threatening, according to police.
