AKRON, Ohio — A teenage girl was struck by gunfire while at a birthday party on Friday that was attended by 8-year-old Mikayla Pickett, who was shot and killed at a home on Roselle Avenue in Akron, according to an update from Akron police.
On Saturday, a 14-year-old girl, accompanied by her parents, walked into Akron Children’s Hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg.
She told officers she was at a birthday party on Roselle Avenue when she was shot. Her injury is considered minor and non-life-threatening.
On Sunday, family and friends held a vigil to honor Mikayla.
Mikayla's death was ruled a homicide. The Summit County Medical Examiner said her cause of death was a gunshot wound to the torso.
"She was only eight years old," Shoska Mika Risper said. "She wasn’t bothering nobody."
Akron police said the unknown suspect or suspects were outside the home and fired multiple shots.
"Just senseless is what it boils down to," Pickett said. "I think all the communities, not just this community, communities all over are tired of having these kinds of vigils for senseless shootings of children."
Police said detectives are still working to identify the person or persons involved in the shooting. Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Akron Police Department Detective Bureau at 330-375-2490 or 330-375-2Tip.
