AKRON, Ohio — A big thank you is in order to the community of News 5 viewers who donated money during a News 5 phone bank in partnership with the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank, the Akron Beacon Journal and WQMX.
The food bank received $81,000 in donations. All donations were matched, dollar for dollar, up to $32,000, thanks in part to a $12,000 contribution from the Scripps Howard Foundation, the charitable arm of News 5's parent company, bringing the total raised to $113,000.
The food bank was scheduled to have staff on hand until 8 p.m., and they tell us they stayed past 10 p.m. because of the high volume of calls.
Thanks to your generosity, the food bank will be able to provide 452,000 meals to people in the community.
