AKRON, Ohio — A piece of American World War II history will land in Akron this weekend. The B-17 Bomber will be available for viewing at Akron-Canton Airport through Sunday.
Nicknamed "flying fortress," the B-17 Bomber earned a reputation during the war for its ability to return home after taking extensive damage.
When it’s not touring the country, this warplane sits at the Airbase Arizona Museum. Built in 1944, the B-17 Bomber "Sentimental Journey" is exceptionally rare as it's only one of 10 in the world that is still flying out of the nearly 13,000 produced from 1936-1945. Approximately 8,000 were lost in battle.
The tour is part of the “Flying Legends of Victory Tour,” which includes three of the museum’s seven flying warbirds, including C-47/DC Combat Legend “ Old Number 30,” B-25 “Maid in the Shade” and the B-17 “Sentimental Journey”
At the peak of the war, some 12,000 were manufactured. With a top speed of 160 mph, the B-17 could fly up to 36,000 feet in the air, according to a fact sheet from the museum. After the war, the B-17 flew for training, testing and at-sea rescue mission.
Visitors are asked to maintain social distancing and wear a mask. Viewing of the B-17 Bomb is Friday through Sunday, 2 to 6 p.m.
If you’re feeling adventurous, rides in the B-17 Bomber begin at $425 per compartment seat. Book your tour here.
