CLEVELAND — A 36-year-old woman who was driving a car down Superior Avenue and crashed into a building in Cleveland early Thursday morning has died, Cleveland police confirmed in a news release.
The 36-year-old woman was traveling westbound down Superior Avenue with a 38-year-old passenger from the intersection of East 110th Street when she went slightly left of the center line and crossed into the left turn lane of Superior Avenue, police said.
The car continued down the left turn lane when it rotated clockwise and crossed back across the westbound lanes. The driver went over the curb of the sidewalk, where the driver’s door collided with a concrete formed garbage bin, the news release said.
Police said the vehicle jumped over a raised asphalt divider, which caused it to rotate counterclockwise.
When vehicle rotated counterclockwise, it went through a chain link fence separating the properties of 10899 and 10819 of Superior Avenue. The right side of the car collided with the east wall of 10819 before it finally came to a rest.
The 38-year-old passenger climbed out of the right side of the window and was found near the vehicle. Police said the 36-year-old driver was found in the left rear seat and firefighters mechanically extricated her from the vehicle.
The 36-year-old woman was taken to University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center where she was pronounced dead, police said.
Authorities have not released the driver's identity at this time.
