Man killed, teen injured after officer-involved shooting, car crash in Cleveland

CLEVELAND — Authorities are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Cleveland on Thursday.

Around 2 p.m., an off-duty Cleveland police officer encountered two males who were "possibly involved in criminal activity" in the area of West 25th Street and Archwood Avenue, police said.

The off-duty officer left the scene in his personal vehicle and then re-encountered the males in the area of West 25th Street and Pearl Road. The males were inside of a car when one of them produced a weapon, according to police.

The off-duty officer then fired his weapon, police said.

The driver of the vehicle, a man in his early 20s, crashed into a fence outside of Riverside Cemetery. The man was transported by EMS to MetroHealth Medical Center in critical condition where he later died, according to police

The other male involved is in his teens. After the crash, the teen fled on foot but was taken into custody and transported in stable condition to MetroHealth Medical Center.

Police Union President Jeff Follmer said the officer is okay and was not injured in the incident.

The Cleveland Division of Police Use of Force Investigation Team and the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident.
