CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo welcomed its first baby koala in 10 years.

The baby koala, known as a joey, is a first for mom Mackenzie and dad Nyoonbi.

Joeys stay in the mother’s pouch for about six months, so zookeepers have been keeping a close eye on Mackenzie, first noting possible pouch movement in May.

On Tuesday, the joey officially left the pouch and climbed onto mom’s lap.

Zoo guests can have a chance to see this mother and baby duo at the Gumleaf Hideout in Australian Adventure on even-numbered calendar dates between 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
