Cleveland police officer arrested for drunk driving by state trooper

Posted

A Cleveland police officer is accused of drunk driving for the 2nd time after he was arrested by a state trooper.

According to court records, 49-year-old Robert Sweany — an officer from Cleveland's 1st district — was charged with OVI and a lane change violation stemming from a traffic stop on Interstate 71 in Ashland County on Dec. 20.

Sweany was off-duty at the time of the incident.

In dashcam video of the incident, the trooper can be heard telling Sweany that authorities received multiple phone calls about the way he was swerving all over the road.

The trooper asks Sweany to step out of his car and then takes the Cleveland officer's gun.

Sweany, who appears to be covered in urine, climbs out of the car seemingly unaware of having soiled himself until the trooper points it out.

The Cleveland officer is asked to take a field sobriety test but refuses and is arrested by the trooper.

Sweany has been with Cleveland police since he was hired in 2000.

In 2013, Sweany was charged with OVI, according to Medina Municipal Court records.  He was placed on probation for one year after his arrest.

Sweany has been placed on restricted duty until his case is resolved in court, authorities said.

He is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 12.
