CLEVELAND — A Cleveland police officer was shot while responding to a call in a home on Cleveland's East Side on Monday morning, according to Chief of Police Calvin Williams.

At around 3:45 a.m., Cleveland police officers responded to a report of a female in distress at a home in the 2000 block of East 81st Street near Euclid Avenue.

Cleveland fire, police, EMS, and the department's SWAT team all responded to what became a three-hour standoff.

Officers made contact with the female in the house. Outside of the home, police say that officers received information that a male inside the home had a weapon and possibly fired a shot through the floor.

Officers went upstairs to the second floor of the home, where police said the residents inside shared a common bathroom. When the officers knocked on the door, a male was standing there with a weapon, at which time shots were exchanged between the officer and the male shooter, according to police.

A female officer was shot multiple times in the back and arm and taken to University Hospitals in stable condition.

"She still has a long way to go, but she is doing well and is with her family now," Williams told reporters this morning. "We are asking folks to pray for her and her family, but right now she is in stable condition."

The alleged shooter inside the house has been taken into custody. In total, four men came out of the house in handcuffs, according to a News 5 reporter who was on scene.

Williams added, "The male we believe to be the suspect was taken into custody by the SWAT team shortly after the shooting. He is being interviewed by investigators."

The alleged shooter was taken to Metro Hospital for reported leg pain, before being booked in the Cuyahoga County Jail.

A gun was recovered from his house.
