A teenager was injured Wednesday afternoon in a shooting near Ontario Street and Euclid Avenue.
Cleveland police said the victim was a 13-year-old girl who was shot twice, once in each thigh, around 5 p.m. A man carrying the girl approached police. She was taken behind a zone car for cover due to possible other ongoing threats, and first aid was administered to her wounds. The girl was then taken to MetroHealth Medical Center for treatment.
Despite conflicting reports, police said no shots were fired inside the nearby Jack Casino or at Tower City.
One 15-year-old boy was taken into custody and is facing weapons charges. It is unclear whether he was the shooter but he was found with a gun.
Police did not specify the relationship between the suspect and the victim.
Police Chief Calvin Williams said it was unfortunate one incident cast a bad light over what was otherwise a "stellar day for Cleveland and the Cavaliers."
"One idiot spoils the party, always," Williams said, adding that the shooting was an isolated incident that sparked a domino effect. Williams said false 911 calls in the area followed, adding to the chaos.
Multiple businesses, including the casino and a nearby restaurant, were evacuated. Police asked the public to avoid the area.
The investigation is ongoing.
