CLEVELAND — Cleveland police and fire responded to a crash on St. Clair Avenue that killed a driver and injured two children early Wednesday morning.

The crash happened at around 3:27 a.m. in the 13600 block of St. Clair Avenue in Cleveland. News 5 photojournalist Mike Vielhaber witnessed a heavily damaged vehicle after it appeared to have hit a utility pole.

A Cleveland EMS supervisor confirmed a female driver died and two children, a 5-year-old and a 5-month-old, were transported in serious condition to a nearby hospital.

The medical examiner later identified the driver as 26-year-old Tinita McGee.

According to Cleveland police, a preliminary investigation indicates that the car was heading down St. Clair Avenue at a speed higher than the posted speed limit, went off the side of the road and hit a utility pole.

The matter remains under investigation.
