It just may be the one vote you make that you can feel free to talk about around the dinner table, and what's better, it's one you can legally cast multiple times. It is the online fan vote for the 2019 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees.
"It's a remarkable class, we've got 15 great nominees and we're coming down to the wire now," said Rock Hall President and CEO Greg Harris. "The voting is open until midnight on December 9." Winners will be announced sometime next week.
This is the third year the Rock Hall has conducted a fan vote and over three million votes have already been cast with fans able to go onto the Rock Hall's website and cast their vote for 5 of the 15 nominees. The top 5 vote-getters will have their names placed on a ballot which will be counted as part of the nomination process.
And even though this is one of hundreds of votes, Harris points out that over the last three years "of the top five vote-getters from the fans, I believe each year four of them have been elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. So it's tracking with the critical vote as well."
Three voting stations have been set up in the Rock Hall itself with Doug Cubberley sharing his choices on a visit from Bowling Green. "Def Leppard, big fan of the hair bands of the 80's — Bon Jovi got in last year," he said. "Also earlier music like the Zombies." As a Fleetwood Mac fan, he cast another vote for Stevie Nicks, who is on the ballot as an individual artist. "And then John Prine who just has been around for years."
"I like the fact that the fans have an opportunity to cast a vote for who gets into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame," Cubberley said.
The 2019 inductions will take place in New York after Cleveland played host this year, but for the first time since the Hall opened, Clevelanders won't have long to wait with the inductions returning in 2020.
"In the first 24 years the inductions were in Cleveland once," Harris said. "In the last 10 years, we've had them four times and we're really building this critical mass and momentum and we're just so excited to have it here every other year."
