CLEVELAND — For one day, and one day only, the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument on Public Square will open its mysterious passages to the public. It's a labyrinth of passageways with exposed brick and stone, telling the history of Cleveland that is often forgotten.

The tunnels underneath the monument will open on April 27 at 9:00 a.m. The line for the tour closes at 4:00 p.m. Everyone in line at 4:00 p.m. is guaranteed a tour. Tours usually last about an hour. More info here.

The free tours are open to the public and no reservations are needed.

The executive director of the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument spoke to News 5 in 2018 about the history of this Cleveland gem.

"If you're familiar with the European Cathedral building system, same architectural design," said Tim Daley, the monument's executive director.

"What's interesting about the concentric circles that make up the basement is it's actually functional and it's meant to support the 140 tons of the black Quincy granite and the 125-foot tall shaft," he said.
