Man charged in crash that killed a Beachwood high school teacher appears in court

CLEVELAND — Sanford Doss, the man who is charged in a crash that killed a Beachwood high school teacher and another passengerwhile they were in an Uber, is scheduled to appear in front of a judge in Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas Thursday.

On Thursday, Doss was given a $100,000 bond and his next court appearance is scheduled for May 14.

On April 3, his case was bounded over to the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas and he was given a $250,000 bond. Doss is charged with two counts of aggravated vehicular homicide and one count of aggravated vehicular assault.

The crash happened on March 30 at the intersection of South Woodland and Warrensville Center roads in Shaker Heights. Two passengers in one of the cars died as a result of the crash. Police identified the victims as Arthur Gugick, 59, and Barbara Becker, 52. Police also said the two were passengers in an Uber.

Gugick was a beloved high school math teacher. In addition to being a teacher and mathematician, Gugick was also well-known in the LEGO community. He was featured in a Washington Post story about the convention in 2010.
