CLEVELAND — The man accused of killing a couple at a Cleveland car dealership questioned his alleged accomplice on the stand Thursday.
Joseph McAlpin is representing himself in the trial. McAlpin is accused of plotting the break-in that led to the shooting deaths of Trina and Michael Kuznik, and their dog, Axl, two years ago.
McAlpin's alleged accomplice, Andrew Keener, took a plea deal earlier this year.
As part of Keener's plea deal, he had to take the stand.
McAlpin tried painted Keener as a liar during the trial on Thursday.
Keener said he only stepped into Mr. Cars' lot for a few minutes the day the Kuznik's were killed and that was only to drive away a stolen Mercedes.
He said it was McAlpin who went into the dealership and that he was armed.
Keener said he hoped to use the money from the theft to help fuel his meth and heroin habit. He said he never got paid a nickle and didn't find out about the murders until more than a week later.
"I cried. I just, I felt real bad. I still didn’t want my family to end up the same way," Keener said.
But McAlpin attacked Keener's testimony and pointed out a string a lies Keener told detectives.
"Every time I lied it was because I didn’t want nobody to hurt my family," Keener said.
Keener is expected to be back on the witness stand Friday morning.
