CLEVELAND — The owner of a Cleveland deli said he protected himself and his store by firing a shot at suspected robbers who had brought a gun into the store.

Ramsis Makkar, the owner of Clark Deli on West 73rd Street, said two men entered his store acting suspiciously. One of the men tried to get behind the counter with a gun in his hand, so Makkar grabbed the gun next to him and fired a shot, he said.

The bullet hit a glass cooler and the two men fled the store, according to Makkar.

"It was just automatic. I did not feel anything, I just found the gun on my head and I shot, I don't know even how I got the gun from beside me, I don't know anything, I just got the gun and I shot," Makkar said.

Makkar isn’t sure if he hit the suspected robber.

"All I know is I just shot to save my life,” Makkar said. “I am sure he was going to kill me behind that counter."
