RTA board president resigns amid investigation of his lack of healthcare payments

Posted

The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority board president resigned at the board's request on Thursday amid an investigation into healthcare payments.

An investigation was launched after reports that board president George Dixon failed to pay healthcare premiums for insurance provided by RTA for years. He reportedly signed up for healthcare through a program offered to all board members by RTA, which is self-insured. The board says no other current board members are enrolled in the RTA healthcare plan.

The RTA board said it became aware of the questions about Dixon's payments on Tuesday.

“This comes as a shock to all of us who have known George for so long, and we’re profoundly disappointed,” said South Euclid Mayor Georgine Welo. “Failure to pay for your health care would be a serious issue for anyone at RTA – particularly someone in a leadership position.”

The board is not divulging any other information at this time, because this is in an ongoing investigation.

Dixon was appointed to the board in 1992 and has been president since 1994.
