Several Cleveland SWAT officers hospitalized after hit-and-run crash

CLEVELAND — At group of Cleveland police officers were injured while in en route to a SWAT call on Lexington near East 55th Street Friday morning.

Around 3:20 a.m., SWAT officers were responding to a call, traveling east on St. Clair Avenue, when the SWAT van was struck by a Ford Fiesta, police said.

According to police, the driver of the Ford failed to stop for the flashing red traffic signal.

The SWAT van struck a pole after it was struck by the Ford, police said.

Five SWAT officers were seriously injured in the crash and one remains hospitalized, according to police.

The driver of the Ford was taken into custody after previously fleeing the scene and police said they believe alcohol was a factor.

The crash remains under investigation.
