CLEVELAND — The record-high water levels on Lake Erie are a nightmare for property owners, but for surfers, they're exactly what they are looking for.
Surfers took to Edgewater Beach Friday morning to ride the waves.
One of the surfers, Ben Stefanski, said it was one of the best days to surf the lake.
“I kinda look for where the waves are the biggest and I sit right there trying to catch the big ones, which is what surfing’s kinda about, catching big waves,” Stefanski said.
Beach Hazard Warnings were in effect Friday morning into the afternoon, but have since expired.
Adventure Sports Network suggests that those looking to surf Lake Erie's waves have a board with high volume.
Because the Great Lakes are freshwater, they’re therefore less buoyant than the ocean. While some waves are punchy in the winter, the lack of buoyancy, increased wetsuit thickness and sometimes-soft waves mean stepping up the volume of your board is critical.
