CLEVELAND — Cleveland police officers were involved in a shootout early Saturday morning.
It happened on East 71st Street when officers were recovering a vehicle taken in a robbery on Cleveland’s West Side, according to Cleveland Police Union President Jeff Follmer.

Officers were in the process of recovering the stolen vehicle and requesting a tow for it when they called for another car to respond to the scene to assist as they were low on fuel, Cleveland police said.
Police said as officers were waiting, a 17-year-old got into the car, drove onto the sidewalk and crossed the parking lot, driving over a snow bank and crashing into a police cruiser head-on.
Officers at the scene exchanged gunfire and the teen was later taken into custody.
According to Cleveland EMS, paramedics responded to the 2600 block of East 71st Street and transported a 17-year-old to University Hospitals in stable condition. Additionally, a 30-year-old and a 35-year-old were also transported to UH in stable condition.
Cleveland police said no officers were struck by gunfire and neither was the teen involved in the shooting.
Investigators found a loaded handgun in the stolen vehicle.
The matter remains under investigation.
