CLEVELAND — The first sloth bear born in January at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo for the first time in 30 years finally has a name.

Zoo officials revealed the cub's name is Shala, following a naming campaign that raised more than $2,400 to support work fighting illegal wildlife tracking.

Shala, born to mom, Shiva, and dad, Balawat, is a unique name that pays homage to sloth bears' native regions in India.

Shiva and cub, Shala, will participate in animal enrichment activities during the zoo's annual Kids Day on Saturday, June 1 and Sunday, June 2.
